Ludlow Palmers
helping to conserve the fabric and treasures of St Laurence's
St John's Chapel

The Chapel of St John the Evangelist was the special chapel of the Palmers' Guild. When the enhancements to the Church of the 1440s took place special attention was lavished on the Chapel with some of the finest glass and woodwork.

The C15 chapel screen with its panel tracery, vine trail cornice and dado pierced with quatrefoils is the finest in the church.

The baldacchino is a unique survival perhaps because of a possible association with Elizabeth I's mother Catherine of Aragon.

The stained glass is all C15 and of the finest quality. This is described in detail on other pages.

Because of its special connection with the Palmers several of the Guild's wardens were buried here.
